AI agents vs agentic AI: an AI agent is one piece of software that does a specific job using tools, while agentic AI is the wider approach, or system, where AI plans, decides and acts towards a goal, often with several agents working together. In practice, many people use the two terms for the same thing. That is why you keep hearing both and nobody explains the gap.
If you run a business in Nigeria and a vendor has told you “we do agentic AI”, this guide will help you ask better questions.

First, a quick word on chatbots
A chatbot answers when you ask. You type, it replies, and that is the end of it. It does not open your accounting system or send the invoice. An AI agent can. It reads the request, checks your system, takes the action and tells you when it is done.
What is an AI agent?
An AI agent is software built around an AI model that can use tools, such as your email, a spreadsheet or a customer database, to finish a task. Anthropic, the company behind Claude, describes agents as systems where the AI dynamically directs its own process and tool use. It separates these from “workflows”, where the AI follows steps that a programmer fixed in advance.
Think of one trained staff member with one clear job: reading incoming invoices and logging them, or replying to common customer questions and passing hard ones to a person.
What is agentic AI?
“Agentic” means “able to act with some independence”. Agentic AI is the bigger idea: AI that takes a goal, breaks it into steps, uses tools, remembers what happened and adjusts. Anthropic uses “agentic systems” as the umbrella term that covers both workflows and agents.
A 2025 review paper, AI Agents vs. Agentic AI: A Conceptual Taxonomy, Applications and Challenges, draws a sharper line. It treats AI agents as task-specific automation, and agentic AI as systems with several agents working together, breaking tasks down dynamically and keeping memory. Other writers draw the line in other places, and the term is not formally standardised. So when someone uses either word, ask what they actually mean.
The difference side by side
| AI agent | Agentic AI (the wider approach) | |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | One task or a narrow job | A larger goal with many steps |
| Team | Usually one agent | Often several agents coordinating |
| Decisions | Within set limits | Plans and adjusts as it goes |
| Memory | Short, per task | Carries context across steps |
| Risk | Easier to check and limit | Needs stronger guardrails |
| Business example | Sort and log supplier invoices | Chase a late payment end to end: check the ledger, draft the reminder, update records, flag exceptions |

Which one does your business need?
Start small. Anthropic’s own advice is to find the simplest solution possible and only add complexity when needed, because agentic systems often trade speed and cost for better results on harder tasks.
- You have one repeated, boring task. A single agent is enough. Examples: answering the same ten customer questions, or turning meeting notes into a report.
- The work crosses several steps and systems. You may need an agentic setup, where one part reads, another checks and another acts.
- The task needs judgement or touches money. Keep a person in the loop to approve the final step.
Questions to ask any vendor
- What exactly will the AI do, and what will it not do on its own?
- Which of our systems will it connect to?
- Where does our data go? Can it run privately?
- Who reviews its work, and how do we switch it off?
- Can we pilot one process before committing to more?

FAQ
Are AI agents and agentic AI the same thing?
Not quite. An AI agent is a single piece of software doing a job. Agentic AI is the broader approach of AI acting towards goals. Many people use the terms loosely, so ask for specifics.
Is ChatGPT an AI agent?
A plain chat window is a chatbot. It becomes agent-like when it can use tools and take actions for you, not just reply.
Is agentic AI safe for a small business?
It can be, with limits. Start with one process, restrict what the AI can access, and make a person approve anything involving money or customers’ sensitive data.
Do I need agentic AI, or will a chatbot do?
If you only need questions answered, a chatbot may be enough. If the work needs actions across your systems, you need an agent.
